Synths ⇝ Roland ⇝ Roland U-20

The U-20 is a an early rompler and the successor to the Roland D-10. Its sound engine is based entirely on sampled waveforms, which processors and memory had finally advanced enough to support as a synth engine in the late 1980's. It competed with the more successful Korg M1 from the same time period.

It can be expanded with the SN-U110 series of expansion cards. It is available in rackmount for as the Roland U-220.
