The VL7 is a physical modeling synthesizer.
Other physical modeling synths from Yamaha include the VL-1, VL-70m, EX5, and EX5R. In addition, Yamaha produced the PLG100-VL and PLG150-VL plugin boards, which lets you add a VL engine to any PLG-enabled Yamaha synth.
