The CZ-101 is based on phase distortion (PD) synthesis, which is similar to FM synthesis. It has non-velocity-sensitive mini-keys and can be powered with six "D" batteries. Of the CZ series of synthesizers, the CZ-101 is the one most like a toy/home-keyboard.
In spite of its limitations, the CZ-101 was very popular and sold more than 65,000 units. The CZ-1000 is an upgraded version with full-sized keys.
