The first version of Cakewalk was a MIDI-only sequencer developed by Twelve Tone Systems and released in 1987. It was later renamed to Cakewalk Pro Audio when digital audio recording features were added, and later renamed to SONAR. In 2008, Roland purchased a majority interest in the company. In 2013, Roland sold the company to Gibson, who discontinued the software in 2017. In 2018, the brand and assets were purchased by the company BandLab in Singapore. SONAR's name was changed back and the product is now known as "Cakewalk by BandLab".
