Not to be confused with the original Sequential Circuits also founded by Dave Smith, Sequential was founded in 2002 as Dave Smith Instruments and in 2018 changed its name to Sequential after Dave Smith regained the rights to the name. Focusrite bought the company in 2021.

Dave Smith died of a heart attack May 31, 2022 at age 72 in Detroit, Michigan while attending the Movement electronic music festival.
