The Kawai K5 is an additive synthesizer. Sounds are created by setting the levels for up to 126 sine wave harmonics.

The K5 is one of the worst-sounding and most difficult to program synthesizers ever produced. It is the predecessor to the K5000, which was fairly popular, but the K5 has no class, no charm, and little sonic depth. Thinking that the K5 would be nearly as good as the K5000 because they have a similar architecture would be an easy mistake to make, but still a mistake.

It is available in rackmount form as the Kawai K5m.
